The academic organization of the School of Philosophy is based on a sui generis model in Costa Rica’s higher education system. This special feature is due to both the own demands of philosophical teaching and to several particular historical circumstances, that led to this sort of organization over the years.
The study program is also derived from the School’s organization into sections (Introductory Cycle, Epistemology and Reasoning, Philosophical Traditions and Debates, and Practical Philosophy). And the program consists precisely in completing credits by participating in courses and seminars appertaining to the sections. This allows students to structure their own study program individually and entirely free, except for some (few) mandatory classes. As the sections are also research programs on their own right, students will have the chance, not only to learn philosophy in those courses and seminars, but also to engage in the practice of producing philosophy.
